Cold snap continues with snow flurries diminishing through Sunday. Highs near zero to above zero and lows around 10 below. Record of fines and charges in local court, marriage licenses, births, and a Sigourney hospital birth noted.
Col. Edward J. Murray denies stealing $250000 in diamonds brought to San Francisco from Tokyo. He says gems were acquired on a finders keepers basis and that no legal owner existed, while Customs collects a 532-diamond display valued about $230000. Murray awaits U S Army questioning and return to Japan.
Due to weather and road conditions the weekend student conference on social and political action at Cornell College was called off at Friday noon. The event, sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee, would have gathered delegates from Iowa Minnesota Wisconsin Illinois and Missouri.
The Rev. Lyle K. Anderson will speak on One Who Failed to Obey at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Shueyville Sunday at 9 30 a.m. Church school is at 10 30 a.m. Choir practice at 7 p.m. and Christian Endeavor at 8 p.m.

An all female jury of 12 was chosen to try Opal Dixon, 35, on charges of entering a bank with intent to rob. County Attorney Carroll Switzer and Defense Attorney Ray Hawke led juror screenings from 31 candidates. Dixon appeared in a gray suit and kept emotion under control during opening sessions.
Boy Scout Week begins marking the thirty seventh anniversary of Scouting in the Waubeek area council Linn Jones and Benton counties. The Exposition at Memorial Coliseum February 14 15 emphasizes the theme Scouts of the World Building for Tomorrow. Sunday is Scout Sunday with Cubs and Scouts attending church. The world fellowship fund has given 110646.36 to aid overseas rebuilding. total Scouting membership worldwide stands at 4 413 139 with 1 980 000 in the United States.
Ida Mae Wenger of West Union and Boone died in a local hospital after a one week illness. Surviving are her daughters Ida Mae Wenger, Elizabeth Thompson, and three brothers W J Peters Fred F Peters and Edward C Peters. She was a member of several fraternal organizations. Services set for Monday at Turner chapel with Crescent lodge and Masonic attendance. Body to be taken to Boone for burial.
Funeral services for John A. Limback 82 Cedar Rapids oldest lumber merchant will be at 9 am Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church. Mrs Frank J Janeba 64 of 1432 Second Street SW Cedar Rapids died in a local hospital at 1 20 am Friday after a four month illness She was born in Czechoslovakia April 1 1882 Surviving husband two sons Frank J Janeba Jr of Houston TX and Joseph J Janeka of Cedar Rapids four grandchildren and a sister Mrs Joseph Matias of Cedar Rapids She was active in several Czechoslovakian groups and associations Funeral arrangements to be announced by Jeneba funeral home
Mrs Mary L Simmers of Nashville Tennessee and former Cedar Rapids resident died Thursday evening after an extended illness. Born in New York Feb 26 1858 she moved to Cedar Rapids in 1907 and to Nashville in 1927. Surviving are son W J Scherrebeck Cedar Rapids daughter Ina M Scherrebeck and three grandchildren. Body to be brought to Lowden Iowa for 2:30 pm services and burial.
John Grother 73 a lifelong Cedar Rapids resident died in a local hospital at 6 30 p m Wednesday after a long illness. Services set for 11 a m Saturday in Turner chapel pastored by Rev Ralph B Colton. Burial in Oak Hill cemetery. Survived by brother W J Grother of Omaha and three nieces and three nephews. Friends may call at the chapel Saturday morning.
Mrs. Charlotte Carrie Johnson Augustine a Cedar Rapids resident for 47 years died in a local hospital at 11 45 a m after a long illness She was born February 28 1863 in Bassett Indiana and came to Cedar Rapids She leaves a daughter Miss Cecil Augustine and a son Byron Augustine both of Cedar Rapids with no brothers listed Also a member of the community is noted but details end abruptly.
A service for Elder W. S. Lawrence of the Seventh Day Adventist church will be held at Turner chapel at 3 30 p m Monday. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery. Friends may attend.

The region battled heavy snow with Cedar Rapids hit hard as trains stalled. Schools closed across Martelle Coggon and Manchester with vast roadblocks and no train service for days. Freight and passenger service faced major delays as routes from Cedar Rapids to Waterloo and beyond suffered cancellations and late arrivals.
The Linn County Humane Society urged bird lovers to aid birds during winter as snow and ice cut off natural food. They recommended two 10 by 15 inch boards with moulding, placed on open ground or sunlit ledges, at least 10 feet apart, to deter squirrels. They also advised using peanut butter, crumbs, seeds, nut meats, corn meal, and ground grains, plus suet lumps, with suspended boards on trees to protect feeders.

Secretary of the Navy Forrestal commended the wartime Navy hospital corps noting a 97 percent survival rate among wounded sailors and Marines, in Washington. The 200000-strong corps received official praise for its performance during wartime.

H. J. McElroy of Cedar Rapids was fined 100 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to selling used cars at retail without a dealer license. He faced six illegal transactions and was the fifth to plead guilty in a week. one man pled not guilty. Deputy Sheriff P. J. Whittemore led the arrests, with Linn county investigation by O. L. Mead of the Iowa Department of Public Safety dealers license division. More arrests were anticipated.
Jerome P Donahue and Martin L Kennedy were fined 100 each by Justice H R Churchill for assault and battery. Ray Neal filed the complaint alleging an attack Wednesday night. Gilbert Pooler was arrested but his charge was dismissed on county attorney’s recommendation.
A Cuban Skymaster Airliner Ruta de Colon crashed west of Madrid with 11 killed including five American crew members and several passengers from Cuba Spain and America.
