Oat Breeders Adopt New Strategy Against Rust
Iowa researchers shift from trying to eradicate rust to minimizing losses by developing multiline oat varieties. By backcrossing multiple rust resistance genes into high yielding agronomically suited plants, multiline lines resist both major and minor rust races. Clinton vs C-237-89 shows multiline yields near 95 percent of full crop with 40 percent loss for susceptible varieties. Breeders expect several new multiline releases by 1967 or 1968 alongside a slight dip in 1964 net farm income.
