Terry McDermott a 23 year old barber from Essexville Michigan won the men's 500 meter speed skating at the Innsbruck Winter Olympics with an Olympic record 40.1 seconds using skates borrowed from his coach Leo Freisinger. Evgeny Grishin of Russia finished tied for second in 40.6 seconds after a slight skid. McDermott's victory gave the United States its first gold and followed Jean Saubert's earlier podiums in women's skiing.
