Chicago market notes show butcher hogs advancing to a five month high with top bids at 14.50 for a lot while overall hogs moved 25 to 59 higher. Cattle and sheep activity remained light with limited price testing and steady to mixed bids across classes.
UPI reports Friday receipts near 60,000, Thursday actuals 80,009, with prices mostly steady and some gains of up to 25 cents on butchers. Hog ranges include 180-200 lbs at 11.75 to 13.15, 200-220 lbs 12.75 to 13.25, and sows from 270-400 lbs at 8.85 to 12.40, with some declines noted in larger weights.
UPI report lists live cattle and hog price ranges by weight classes in Waterloo. Prices show typical spread with steers from 160 to 400 pounds and sows from 270 to 330 pounds, reflecting varied buyer bids in the local market.
Omaha cattle market saw virtually no trading on scattered fat cattle and slaughter steers and heifers remaining from earlier in the week. Cows sold slowly and largely steady with limited sales. cannner to utility cows fetched 11.50 to 14.50 per hundredweight.
Sioux City livestock market report notes cattle and 500 calves none available. UPI reports insufficient slaughter cattle to test prices, leaving market activity unclear.
Wilson and Company remains active in hog and sheep market with plant delivered pricing. Hog prices steady Friday with butchers 200-220 lb at 12.85 to 13.35, some to 13.50, packers 330 lb and down at 11.35 to 11.85. Veal calves market suspended. Lambs and sheep values shown including wool lambs at 17.50 to 18.50 for 80-105 lb, shorn lambs 16.50 to 17.50, yearling wethers 14.00 to 18.00, ewes various, bucks 1.00 to 2.00 per 100 lb. Poultry and egg notes including broilers, springs, heavy hens, and egg prices. Wool and grain prices listed with No 1 wool at 43c and soybeans at 19.

In New York the stock market fell on Friday as weakness in steel stocks pressured prices. Trading was slow with volume around 2.5 million shares as pivotal issues slipped from fractional declines to about 2 or 3 points.

Special to The Gazette Iowa City Donald Norton 22 of Anamosa co captain of the University of Iowa football team pled guilty to a disorderly conduct charge and was fined 10 dollars plus costs. Charles Woods 24 pled innocent to a similar charge with a hearing set for Wednesday. Frederick Erhardt 21 also a SUI student was fined 10 dollars and costs on intoxication charge.
The Volga post office received the regional director's annual safety award for superior motor vehicle performance. The Volga office earned a perfect no accident record for fiscal year 1959. Rural carriers R. C. Wolf and W. L. Conboy were cited for individual awards.
AP reports grain prices were steady to firm most of the day in Chicago with scattered short covering and light demand from commercial and export accounts. Wheat, rye and soybeans rose at times while feed grains stayed near prior closes.

New York trade shows moderate butter demand with receipts of 590,000. Creamery butter grades AA 93 score at 58 to 59.4 cents and A 92 score at 58.4 to 59. Extras 48 to 50 pounds priced 28.5 to 29.0 cents. Exas receipts total 3,800 with extras 26 to 27 and 23 to 24 cents for checks.
AP USDA market update notes Thursday receipts at Chicago for live pointhaya with no prices due to scarce sales data. Overall demand moderate with russets firm and red round varieties steady. Idaho russets traded 5.49 to 8.45, Red River Valley pontiacs 2.65 to 2.80, United States shipments about 498, with 83 potato arrivals tracked and total on track at 218.

Des Moines witnesses testifying about forced resignations in the IRS office faced clashes on the congressional subcommittee as Rep. Robert Barry accused Rep. Dante Fascell of seeking speculation. Fascell condemned the harassment of employees, while Friday’s session largely featured former employees accusing coercion. The prior day IRS Iowa Director W Lee Phillips refused to release personnel meeting records citing a directive from Commissioner Dana Latham.
Allan T. Fairbanks 76, retired farmer, will be held Monday at 1 30 p.m. at Goettsch funeral home. A Monticello native, he farmed near town until 12 years ago when he retired and moved to town. Survivors include his wife, three daughters Velma Clark of Monticello, Mrs Otto Riedel of Dubuque, and Mrs E M Eckberg of Galva Illinois, and a brother.
SIGOURNEY John Freres 80, owner of a car agency and a farm equipment firm since 1913, died Thursday. Survived by daughter Mrs. George Stoner of South English. Services Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sigourney Methodist Church. Body at Reynolds Funeral Home.
Robert Thompson pled guilty in municipal court to filing a false hit and run report. The Cedar Rapids man admitted he filed the report to obtain a $165 insurance claim. Judge Loren Dullinger Jr. presided Friday.
Cedar Rapids police reveal 1959 saw 148 cars stolen valued at 191 085, a 48.6 percent rise from 1958's 72 thefts. Chief Lester Woodward credits juvenile groups and lax ignition practices, noting 73 arrests cleared 97 thefts and 93 cars were taken with keys in ignition.
Elizabeth Lerch 75 native of Germany died Thursday afternoon at her Central City home. She came to the U S at age six and lived in Linn and Cedar counties. Survived by husband Carl Lerch at Central City and five sons four daughters, two sisters and six brothers. Services Sunday at Murdoch funeral home Marion. Burial Cedar Memorial. Donations to cancer fund advised.
A 27 year old Cedar Rapids man Ronald Alexander of 630 Seventh St SE was charged after police said part of the loot from Abraham's Grocery at 512 Fifth St SE was found with him. The stolen cash totaled $65 and six cartons of cigarettes. Most cigarettes were recovered with his arrest.
Enlistment of four men announced Friday includes Frederick H. Sutton 22 of Iowa City and Arnold J. Krapfl 20 Hopkinton who will serve in Europe. Donald L. Odegard 19 of 1600 B Ave NE enlisted in the air force for technical training and will report to Lackland Air Force Base Texas. Thomas J. Shannon 17 of Wyoming joined the Marine Corps and will be sent to the San Diego recruit depot.
