Female soldier sentenced in hanging death of lover
Army Spec. 5 Nancy Jean Varraso, 23, was sentenced by a jury to eight years and a dishonorable discharge for the second degree murder related to the hanging death of Pfc. Tammy Meza-Luna last Sept. 28 at Fort Story Virginia Beach. The discharge includes automatic reduction to the lowest enlistment grade and forfeiture of all pay and allowances with parole possible in about 20 years. The case hinged on testimony that the victim, emotionally unstable and threatening self harm, was lured to the woods and hanged, with the government alleging motive from a relationship between Varraso and Spec. Becky Smith. The defense contended no murder motive and rejected homo sexual jealousy as motive.
