The U S unemployment rate fell to 7.3 percent in January from 7.8 percent in December as winter weather and a drop in the labor force are blamed. The Bureau notes declines across adult men and women teenagers whites and minorities with jobless totals easing and full time and blue collar rates down. Officials caution weather effects may shift February figures.
Five suspects were arrested in the 1974 assassination of U S Ambassador Rodger Davies with a sixth to be pursued by Cypriot police. U N ambassador Andrew Young said Rhodesian Prime Minister Tan Smith must be included in future talks. Rep Paul Rogers plans to lead probes into swine flu program problems and mismanagement of immunization efforts. A woman recounts the trauma of purse snatching and tips to prevent it. In Atlanta a convicted murderess who nursed Amy Carter is reprieved to visit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Weather: clearing and colder tonight with near zero lows, partly cloudy Saturday with highs 10 to 15.
A consultant report to Cedar Rapids city council indicates about 600 off street parking spaces would be needed for a proposed downtown mall. Feasibility depends on mall location near the Five Seasons community center and the size of a planned adjacent parade.
In Fairfax Iowa Sen Dick Clark chairs a first nation hearing on a proposed fifty million tax exempt farmland trust fund to buy prime Midwest farmland. Farmers testified raising concerns about loan rates and grain pricing with calls for a well head style pricing model and revolving fund governance.
Iowa BCI director Craig Beck warns crime could climb from its current low level as violent crime, including murders and assaults, has roughly doubled since 1969. He notes rural areas report more murders and stresses solving unsolved cases as a key deterrent while Iowa remains 35th in the nation for violent crime.
Public Safety Commissioner E L Colton urges Sen Robert Rush to close the Cedar Rapids Police Academy. He argues existing colleges should handle police training and notes the current recruitment and training system is costly and cumbersome.
City officials announce a two week program giving residents free personal use wood from the tree dump near the REA power station. The site runs 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily except Sundays through Feb. 19 with a no more than one cord per person per day rule and required free permits.
