Weather forecast for What Cheer and surrounding towns shows mostly cloudy conditions with small temperature changes. Local obituaries, births, marriage licenses, and civil filings are listed, including names from Mercy and St. Luke's hospitals. Five day outlook calls for highs around 30 to 40 and lows in the teens to mid 20s with rain or snow potential early in the period.
The Army Corps in Minneapolis announced a program allowing college degree holders in science, engineering, and administration to apply directly for commissions. Age usually 21 to 27, with master or doctoral degrees or a bachelor’s degree plus three years of relevant experience. Fields include chemistry physics bacteriology engineering meteorology accounting and more. Enlistments of two army men reported include August R. Grappendorf 22 Iowa City enlisting for duty in Europe and Donald D. Sedrel 19 1669 Ellis Blvd NW enlisting for aircraft maintenance training. Ben J. Caskey 17 Morrison was sent to the San Diego recruit depot after arriving in Des Moines.
The Senate Commerce Committee approved Whitey Gilliland of Glenwood Illinois for a full six year term on the Civil Aeronautics Board. He has served since last November filling a term ending December 3. The committee vote followed a two hour hearing with praise from Illinois Republican senators Bourke B. Hickenlooper and Thomas E. Martin.
A large low pressure area moved south of forecasts, with rain and snow easing for Jews escaping the worst. Forecasters kept hopes up as light rain or drizzle possible in the west and south Wednesday night. Thursday will be partly cloudy with little temperature change. The system moved into the Texas Panhandle and into southwest Oklahoma, then eastward, with potential moisture if it curves northwest earlier. Friday outlook is fair to partly cloudy.
The public school system will open bids February 25 at 4 p.m. for four projects in a 996,000 bond issue program. A Cedar Hills elementary school is planned with 13 classrooms, a gymnasium and safetorium, estimated at 408,000, with construction to start this spring.
Dr David O McCoy 48, longtime Collins Radio Co researcher in radio astronomy, died early Wednesday in Rochester Minnesota after leukemia. He was a Cedar Rapids native, former Naval Research Laboratory staff, and authored numerous technical papers. Survived by wife and two daughters, his cremation was planned with services at Turner chapel.
Investigators questioned clerks and shoppers after a three alarm blaze tore through the Herzberg department store floor in downtown Omaha. Firefighters saved Beauty parlor staffer Ettny Backstrom from smoke by opening a window. she is in fair condition. Two women shoppers were treated and released. Several firemen were shaken by smoke and heat. The incident prompted detailed inquiries into the fire’s cause and a large turnout of store employees and customers.
Edwin Parker Pitts of 1424 Wildwood Drive NE Cedar Rapids member of Rapids Equipment Co died Tuesday after a sudden illness. Born May 24 1908 in Cedar Rapids he lived here all his life. Surviving are his wife Marian two sons George and David two daughters Susan and Patricia five sisters Katherine Lefebvre Dorothy Smith Mary Anne Hodge and others. Services at Beatty Burley chapel at 1 30 pm Friday conducted by Rev Reuben Tradon Central Park Presbyterian. Burial Cedar Memorial. Friends may call after 1 pm.
Mark William Fairchild, year-old son of Mr and Mrs Howard Fairchild, M5 Wilson Ave SW, died in University Hospital after a brief illness. Born Sept 1, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, he is survived by his mother, father, and others. Mary Anne Harrington, 81, of a Marion nursing home, died after a lingering illness. Born April 11, 1878, in Lemona win, Kings County Ireland, she came to the United States and Iowa at age three, living in Cedar Rapids area most of her life. Only survivors are nieces and nephews. Burial and funeral arrangements are listed with Immaculate Conception church and Mt Calvary Cemetery, with Msgr. Maurice S. Sheehy officiating. Friends may call at Monahan-Stewart funeral home.
Los Angeles physician Dr R Bernard Finch and co defendant Carole Tregoff are defended against murder charges. Attorney Grant Cooper opened that there was no plot to kill Barbara Finch, outlining a strained marriage from 1953 onward and a staged separation to protect finances and his medical practice. Cooper said Finch would testify to an affair with Carole in 1957 and a subsequent cover while denying any violent intent.
January figures from the Traffic Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce show 805.57 in freight bills reduced before payment and 441.43 in loss and damage claims collected. The bureau handled 555 telephone inquiries and audited 14 543 freight bills while aiding new tower rates, two new bus schedules and a motor carrier package service to other Iowa communities.
Elsie B Petersen widow of Henry E Petersen of 312 Sixth street SE Cedar Rapids died Tuesday after a long illness. Born April 2 near Independence she leaves only cousins as survivors. Services set for 1 30 pm Friday in Turner chapel with Rev Theodore A Youngquist of First Lutheran officiating. Burial in Lingond cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
CHICAGO AP The nation's railroads on Wednesday agreed to arbitration of their wage dispute with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. The union has not announced whether it will accept or reject. Negotiations have ended, and the brotherhood plans a strike vote among its 40,000 members.
London AP reports Labour MP Sir Leslie Plummer introduced a bill to make swastika daubing and similar insulting acts a specific offense. Convictions for publicly insulting religion or race could bring a 100 pound fine, six months in prison, or both.
OELWEIN May mayor Louis Lonborg ordered a crackdown on overtime parking. Police issued 103 tickets to one resident and 69 to another. 98 were chargeable under a one year limit. Donald McMillen was fined $103 with $15 down and $10 weekly payments.
AMES UP I report says at least 90 of 97 bridges built or under construction on the Interstate system in Iowa fail to meet Defense Department specifications. Iowa Highway Commission chief engineer L M Clauson noted nationwide about 89 percent of the 9000 interstate bridges miss required clearances. All 97 Iowa bridges surveyed have a 14.6 foot clearance, below the 16 foot mandate.
In Port Elizabeth South Africa lawyers who call themselves witch doctors use charms bones and magic sticks to promise legal help. They accept cases from petty offenses to murder and charge up to 25 pounds for a supreme court level brief. The practice targets superstitious Africans and offers incantations and recipes to win cases.
VOLGA sub committee presents steering committee report on merging Strawberry Pot Volga Lamont Fayette and Arlington. It cites 1253 children transported to S schools and 1080 town students attending the five schools. The district has 115 teachers now and 46 high school teachers would staff a central high school. next meeting set for Feb 16 at Volga.
