Iowa City lease ends as Armstrong abandons downtown store plan
Unanimous Iowa City Council vote frees Armstrong's department store of Cedar Rapids from a downtown Iowa City development agreement. Allan C Heremsky told City Manager Neal Berlin the chain cannot commit to a construction date due to other financial commitments. A $5,000 deposit will be kept by the city, while a public hearing in Cedar Rapids will discuss revenue sharing for next year. The hearing, at 9 a.m. in City Hall, seeks public input on fund allocation, not department requests. Separately, unemployed Sheet Metal Workers Union locals in Iowa may qualify for aid from a joint union-management fund for those with 1,200 hours under labor agreements.
