Cedar Rapids groups push polygraph tests for police fire hires
Linn County legislators will receive letters from the Cedar Rapids Civil Service Commission and Public Safety Commissioner Floyd Bergen urging an amendment to a bill banning pre employment polygraphs. Bergen and commissioners argue polygraphs are essential for police and firefighter applicants because of job risks and public safety. The commission notes privacy concerns and notes that past performance is hard to gauge, especially across national applicant pools. The letter cites an Iowa Supreme Court ruling allowing polygraphs for police and fire hires and references past New York cases showing arrests from polygraph-driven investigations. A 20 years ago item about a Des Moines youth murder is mentioned as context.
