An FB-111 fighter crashed near Seacrest Village in Portsmouth during a routine training flight. The unarmed jet burst into flames, four buildings and a car burned, three residents were treated for minor injuries, and two crewmen parachuted to safety. Eleven FB-111s have crashed since 1969. no major faults since 1977.
After 12 hours of talks in Warsaw, Premier Pinkowski and Lech Walesa led negotiators to a five day workweek with a six hour Saturday during 1981 and state media air time for Solidarity programs. They failed to resolve recognition of Rural Solidarity farmers union, heightening crisis risk. Strikes continued with prison terms possible for violators of laws.
A U.N. report by the International Narcotics Control Board says illegal drugs are at unprecedented levels worldwide and jeopardize national stability. It notes rising cocaine use among U.S. young adults, widespread marijuana use, heroin spikes in Western Europe, and shifts in opium production to the Middle East and Asia. It urges urgent coordinated action.
