Chariton Man Confesses Murder Of Missing Ottumwa Resident
Claude Foutch of Chariton confessed to murdering Earl Nichols of Ottumwa on December 24 by hammer strike. He led investigators to an abandoned coal mine air shaft southeast of Ottumwa where Nichols' body was reportedly dumped into about 100 feet deep water. Foutch, captured after near asphyxiation gas exposure, described motive as a quarrel over Nichols telling him to stay away from Nichols home. Nichols was a longtime Morrells butcher and survived by a widow and eight children.

Prof Walter Loehwing of the University of Iowa announced to the American Society of Plant Psychologists in Atlantic City that a chemical growth hormone named hetero auxin can push plants to grow with little light at speeds near those with full day exposure. The Iowa state board of control sent 87 year old Decorah Civil war veteran Marvin T. Grattan from Fort Madison prison to the Marshalltown Soldiers' Home. He was sentenced to eight years for manslaughter after killing Claude Meade in 1933 at the Decorah fairgrounds during a horse race dispute. Grattan had earlier been denied a new trial by the state Supreme Court and had been moved from Fort Madison to Marshalltown on a hospital order.
