Robert Ellis Sparked Early Cedar Rapids River Trade
Robert Ellis, a Cedar Rapids settler from 1838, pioneered local commerce by building three flat boats in 1846 loaded with 4,000 bushels of wheat and shipping them to Burlington. His efforts created a farm market and real river traffic, following prior haphazard Cedar River links to St Louis and Mississippi towns. In 1858 the Cedar Rapids steamer built at Beaver, Pennsylvania, operated between St Louis and Cedar Rapids before a river collision destroyed it.
