Young Farmer Killed in Crash near Waukon Iowa
WAUKON Allamakee county farmer Wayne Sweatt, 27, was killed when the car he rode in went out of control on Volney hill about 14 miles southwest of Waukon. The vehicle overturned. Sweatt was pinned under it. Driver Elden Dahl of Postville and three other passengers survived with minor injuries. The death pushes Iowa’s 1953 motor vehicle toll to 613, the second highest total since 1941 and behind 1951’s 625. This marked the third traffic death in Allamakee county that year.

Four-year-old dies in head on collision near Pella
A four year old Michigan boy Christo er Cropsey died when a car and a truck collided on highway 163 four miles west of Pella. His father 36 and mother 32 and another son were injured and taken to hospitals in Oskaloosa. The truck driver George McDonald 43 of Des Moines and a companion Jack Worley of Carlisle were hospitalized. Officers said McDonald braked for a railroad crossing and the truck veered into the car.

Swampy the alligator at Berlin zoo muzzled after attacks
In Berlin the American army mascot Swampy the alligator was ordered muzzled after attempting to bite two commentators.
