Buchanan crash kills youth in two car collision
A 16 year old Dubuque boy, Gregory John Drake, died after a head on crash on U.S. Highway 20 three miles east of Independence. His passenger and other driver Joleyne Kay Neal, 17, of Quasqueton, survived. Neal's mother Viola Neal, 58, was also treated and released. The fatality marked Buchanan County's eighth death of the year.

A Gladbrook couple suffered a fatal blaze after a stove explosion in their basement. Elmer Martens, 68, died after liquid used on wood ignited. Esther Martens remains in critical condition at University Hospitals Iowa City. Services for Elmer Martens are pending.

Tony Watkins, 19, of 140 Summer Circle NE, was arrested on a false information to an officer charge after reporting a shotgun theft on December 24.
