Eric Schine 26, a San Francisco bank employee and former Alpine Club member, wandered for four days after losing his way from Squaw Valley toward Picayune Valley. He lived on leaves and acorns, slept in a snow cave, and hallucinated before rescue began.
Steven Hobbs and his wife Susan, along with Hobbs’s uncle Milford Smith, were near death from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a clogged furnace. A friend’s late morning phone call tipped off Milford, who called for help just before 12 30 PM. All three were found unconscious and later rushed to Mercy Hospital after hours of illness and exposure.
