EPA Expands Light Truck Group for Emission Standards
The EPA extends emission limits to 6,000 to 8,500 pound trucks starting 1979, reclassifying over 700,000 vehicles from heavy to light trucks. Standards drop about 15 percent, raising costs by roughly 219 per vehicle for the larger group while smaller trucks rise only eight dollars. The agency expects no mileage or maintenance impact and cites more realistic vehicle grouping for equal control. An Iowa City fire damaged a home early Wednesday with no injuries.
