The Commerce Department reports the U S trade gap rose to 906 million in November 1976, the largest monthly imbalance in U S history. Imports climbed over 10.5 billion while exports fell to about 9.6 billion, widening the year to date deficit to 13.1 billion through November.
Reporters accompany a milkman on an early morning route when a yard shortcut causes a knife cut to spill blood. Dick Meier, 35, drives on with a bloody hand as the nurse and hospital visit follow a confrontation with danger. The incident ends with discussing whether to drive versus be driven.
GLOUSTER CITY New Jersey AP The grounding of a Liberian tanker during a docking maneuver on the Pennsylvania bank of the Delaware River has created a 20 mile oil slick threatening beaches and wildlife. Coast Guard says details on page 2.

Cedar Rapids city officials discussed phasing out the 25 cent overtime parking ticket at a Tuesday council meeting. Traffic Engineer Mel Meyer noted the policy fails to curb long parking and covers little more than issuance costs, with 4,000 of 9,000 monthly overtime tickets being quarter fines. A move toward a straight 1 dollar fine is considered as a new ticket supply is ordered.
Heidi the skunk, a Christmas gift from 14 year old Shelley Rule to her mother Geneva Rule, was stolen from a cage in the Rules' back yard late Sunday or early Monday. Police report says wire clippers opened the padlocked cage. value $35 to police, but to the family she is a valued pet.
Chicago city council picked 53 year old alderman Michael Bilandic to succeed the late Richard Daley as acting mayor amid a week of racial tension and political maneuvering. Bilandic secured 45 votes to take Daley’s seat until a special mayoral election within six months. Frost opposed the move, with Kelley and other black leaders signaling a shift away from pressing his claim.
President elect Carter announced Vice President elect Walter Mondale will serve as his chief of staff. He outlined an economic package likely to include a tax cut and a work opportunity program to reduce unemployment, stressing cabinet independence and a preinaugural briefing session.
