In Des Moines a 42 year old crippled man named George Christopher Robinson died in a basement fire at the home of Mr and Mrs Alexander. The blaze trapped him as smoke cut off his escape and his sister in law Mrs Alexander found smoke in the basement. Robinson had earlier injuries from a California auto accident.

Waterloo Nun Injured In Highway 20 Crash

Sister Ambrose administrator of St. Francis hospital in Manchester suffered a broken leg in a one car accident on Highway 20 four miles east of Manchester Monday afternoon. She was a passenger in a station wagon driven by Sister Claudette. The car left the road after hitting a snag near the ditch. Sister Claudette and six other nuns were not injured.

Native of Waukon Held in S D Murder

William Rose 39, an Iowa prison farm escapee born in Waukon, is held in Yankton jail after the Central bar killing of George Blakey 51. Police say Rose shot Blakey after a bar argument, then again at close range as he lay. The weapon was a 22 caliber automatic. Rose, at large since Sept. 26, had been serving 30 years for assault with intent to kill.

Cornell Professor Awarded Post-Doctoral Grant

Mt Vernon Dr. Thomas T. Love of Cornell College has received an American Council of Learned Societies post doctoral grant for humanities research. The award, given to 46 scholars, supports his study on religious freedom in the modern world with emphasis on the ecumenical movement spurred by the Vatican II council.

Stanley Allen Mullinix, 58, rural Iowa City, on a first offense plea, was fined 300 dollars and costs and sentenced to two days in county jail. He is not to obtain a new license for 60 days.
