Cornelia Gray Lunt, daughter of Orrington Lunt and a founder of Evans ton, died Thursday in Anston Illinois at her home of 62 years. She was famed as hostess of open house where rich and poor mingled, and she valued a life of compassion over worldly concerns.
France massing forces in Lorraine near the Saar frontier ahead of the January 13 plebiscite. Foreign troops from four nations patrol the streets while border security tightens to curb agitators as Saarlanders grow restive amid increased occupation presence and recent Nazi attack incidents.
In Saarbrucken the Nazi faction led by Hermann Roehling attacked the advisory landesrat during a stormy session ahead of the January 13 plebiscite. She traveled from Paris to Germany to visit her parents and booked passage on the liner Washington but vanished. The embassy in Berlin and U S consulate were notified as frontier officials could not confirm any border sightings.
A Roumanian diplomat told INS that King Carol the second and Magda Lupescu married in exile, a union seen as morganatic. The source noted Carol refused to reclaim the throne without Magda, while Princess Helen’s bid for reconciliation failed amid ongoing court intrigue in Bucharest.

Washington AP reports a plan to more than double the civilian conservation corps to perhaps 1,000,000 men is under serious consideration as part of a winter work relief program. Officials say the program may include a central employment agency and expanded public works such as grade crossing elimination.

Powellton West Virginia AP Clarence J Jarrett labor commissioner said an insufficient water supply in the locomotive boiler caused an explosion that killed 14 miners and two trainmen aboard en route to work. He noted the crown sheet was red hot after the blast and investigations confirmed the water shortage as the cause. In Montgomery Coal Valley Hospital twenty four men were treated for burns and injuries with two in critical condition.
State Rep. Gustave Alesch of Plymouth County says he may seek a probe of the Iowa liquor control commission at the upcoming general assembly. He has written Gov. Clyde L. Herring and received assurance the matter will be examined, and he may push repeal of the liquor law if needed.
Des Moines AP reports chair Harold Cooper invites the fullest investigation of the Iowa Liquor Control Commission activities after Rep. Gustave Alesch of Plymouth County hints at an inquiry during the January general assembly. Cooper says the move would end falsehoods from the recent political campaign. The commission has built a retail network including a central office warehouse and 57 retail units.
