Newton D. Baker longtime Cleveland born wartime Secretary of War under Woodrow Wilson died at 12:40 PM at his home. He was 66 and had suffered a heart attack last week. Baker died as family gathered for Christmas dinner. funeral plans awaited. Known as pacifist yet administered war duties effectively, he streamlined the War Department and built a trusted staff including Bliss and March.
Cedar Rapids saw a sharp daily temperature swing with a high around seven above earlier Saturday dropping to minus twenty six by 5 p.m. Dozens of degrees fluctuated through the evening with zero at 8:30 p.m. Skies remained fair as temperatures edged up one degree later.
