Iowa Capitol display links past Des Moines skyline to present
A new ground floor Capitol exhibit uses four directional panoramas to show Des Moines from 1913. Tour guide Joni Arnett and LIO director Craig Cronbaugh say photos, likely taken from the second floor, reveal a denser, shabbier near grounds with monuments planned for U.S. Sen William Allison. The grounds now span 189 acres a park like setting.

Christmas wish breaks a no pets rule
Calder Wills, a 12-year-old Iowa City boy diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma, received a stem cell transplant in Minnesota and expressed a wish for a cat while isolated at home. Despite a family stance against pets, Calder chose two kittens before his death on November 4, and his mother later adopted them for his siblings as his final wish.

Cedar Rapids transit ridership rises after changes
Cedar Rapids public transit shows about a 6 percent rise in rides four months after major route and time changes began on July 31. Transit manager Brad DeBrower notes early signs are positive but caution is needed. from July through November 2016 489,666 rides were logged, rising to 518,165 this year with minor June tweaks expected.

Government to expand U S missile defense system
The Trump administration plans a major expansion of homeland missile defense to counter North Korea. It includes two $1 billion radar installations, 20 new interceptors, and satellite support to guide kill vehicles, with about $10.2 billion projected over five years, atop more than $40 billion already spent.
