Private firms rival Fortune 500 in size and scope
Private companies may reach Fortune 500 scale with over 50 firms as large as many public giants. Gould's Data Base for American Enterprises covers trading, retail, and financial sectors led by firms like Cargill and Continental Grain. Non manufacturing dominates but few private players hold more than 3 percent of their industry. Bell System remains the major exception with 64 percent of telephone markets.
