Space Problems Seen At Washington Fair

Washington Iowa county 4 H and FFA members enrolled a record 307 market beef projects, up 14 head but same participant count as last year, raising concerns about space as beef barns have been inadequate. New swine and show barns funded by Pork Producers and fair board improvements were added, with ongoing fundraising to expand capacity, while a beef carcass contest rule may boost enrollments and auction eligibility.

Rural and urban home costs converge amid rural shift

A government study shows rural housing costs rose faster than urban ones in 1970 74 yet remain cheaper overall. In 1974 rural median home value reached 24100 while urban median hit 28100. rents also rose more in rural areas though still lower than city rates. Three quarters of mobile homes were in rural areas. Nine of ten black rural households were Southern in 1974.

Bell Cows Lead Linn County Dairy Butterfat Test

Three Bell Cows top the 700 pounds butterfat threshold in the Linn County Dairy Herd Improvement test with Coggan owner Robert W. Bell and a fourth Holstein owned by Jerry D. Akers of Central City. Five other farmers share 14 Holsteins over 600 pounds butterfat, including Robert T. Lawrence and Gary Gradient of Monticello, Richard Liercke of Center Point, Wallis Henderson of Central City, and Wayside Number One of Marion.

Iowan Marvin Telleen Named National Director of Brown Swiss

Madison reports Marvin Telleen of Postville elected national director of the Brown Swiss association at the national convention. Bernard Monson of Gowrie won a third term as national president and also had the second high selling heifer, which brought $1,650 to Elgin Marquart of Comfort, Texas, while the high seller went for $1,700.

Beef Council launches fifth major campaign in Washington area

The Iowa Beef Industry Council sponsors a 10-week regional promotion in metropolitan Washington DC. The effort uses three network stations, five radio outlets, and two daily papers to boost holiday beef buying. council chairman Jim Mullins notes longer campaigns align with retailing patterns. Previous campaigns ran in Boston Philadelphia Detroit and upstate New York. The council also co sponsored efforts in Cleveland and Columbus and distributes posters recipe booklets and how to materials for shoppers.

Hog Farmers Slow Pace of Expansion in Winter

Washington AP reports hog producers plan a slower expansion this winter with 6.1 million sows to give birth Dec 1 to May 30, a 5 percent rise from last year, foreseeing a 44.3 million head pig crop, also up 5 percent. For Jun 1 to Nov 30, 1976, pig crop reached 42.2 million, up 18 percent. Hog and pig inventory Dec 1 stood at 55.1 million, up 11 percent, including eight million sows for breeding and 47.1 million hogs for market, up 5 and 12 percent respectively.

Soviets May Buy Soybeans

Washington AP analysts say the Soviet sunflower seed crop has deteriorated, with harvest at about 90 percent and output seen around five to five and a half million metric tons. If oil shortages grow, the Soviet Union could increase imports of soybeans from the United States and Brazil. Russia has already bought about 1.3 million tons in 1976-77.
