A Boeing 707 operated by British Overseas Airways Corp carrying 107 people ran off a London runway after touchdown from Chicago. All 95 passengers and 12 crew escaped unharmed. one wing and the undercarriage were damaged. Passengers and crew evacuated via emergency chutes as witnesses blamed possible braking failure.
The navy issued new safety steps after the Constellation fire in Brooklyn that killed 49 workers. Rules target fuel tank removal on ships and forbidding wooden scaffolding. require cofferdam protected fuel storage and updated shipboard firefighting training and alarms.
Rome AP reports the Italian government approves a program to improve universities and higher learning by constructing buildings and raising teachers salaries.
Mr and Mrs Cecil Welch and their seven children displaced by a Thursday fire that destroyed their Thorpe home found shelter in Manchester Friday night. A month’s rent was paid, two truckloads of clothing and furniture arrived, and an oil burner was lit thanks to Manchester area donations. Welch, already in Veterans hospital at Iowa City, asked to go home and was transported to Manchester. He will return to the hospital on January 3.
Fort Lewis sergeant Karl Fietze adopted Tran Thi Tuat through Foster Parents Plan Inc. He hitch hiked across the Pacific to deliver a doll to the TB stricken eight year old refugee in Gia Kem Vietnam. He and Tuat visited Saigon museums and parks before returning.
President Eisenhower refuses to turn over foreign aid documents demanded by a House subcommittee, calling it an invasion of executive privilege and pointing to national interest. He orders Treasury to fund the inspector general’s office until January 20 and directs us to ignore the comptroller general.
University of Michigan researchers urged a large scale, long range program to study national air traffic control system. They warned disasters may rise without immediate action and noted the 1938 design now handles over 109000 planes. The plan aims to reduce congestion costs and improve safety for faster jets.

Led by H H Fortner the crew delivered a leather armchair table lamp and flashlight collected from 90 railroaders.
Santa and Rev Donald Mizell led a ceremony where trainmen on the Florida run surprised Mrs. Smith with gifts on a platform. Fortner noted the gesture grew from longtime talk of giving her a present and highlighted Mrs. Smith memory of signaling trains and the loss of four of her seven children in a 1933 school bus collision with an ACL train.

He said thoughtfulness and respect for traffic laws will save lives and prevent accidents, noting it is the responsibility of every American to demonstrate highway courtesy for others and themselves.

In Montreal, Marie Dionne Houle, wife of court clerk Florian Houle, gave birth Saturday to a daughter. It is the couple's first child. Cecile and Annette, two of Marie's surviving sisters, each have one child, while Yvonne remains unmarried.
