About 450 travelers on a Chicago to Cincinnati train faced eight hours in minus 10 degree weather when heating pipes froze near Kankakee. The 15 car James Whitcomb Riley halted for repairs as crews worked. many waited in the small station while others slept aboard, and roughly 30 checked into local hotels.
Violinist Yehudi Menuhin was admitted to a London clinic on Thursday for an operation. Hospital sources said the procedure was routine and the musician is in satisfactory condition.
Washington rejects Russia's appeal to curb Laotian fighting, citing ongoing U S aid to Gen. Phoumi Nosavan. Russia urges Britain and the U S to revive the 1954 Geneva supervision and halt U S military support to the rebel forces and personnel in Laos. Britain and Russia co chair the Geneva group and call for U S influence to end foreign assistance and withdraw American forces.
Sir Winston Churchill, 86, recovering from a back injury, leaves London for a 35 mile drive to Chartwell in Kent for a Christmas holiday. He travels with Clemmie and a cigar, after two specialist visits, to preside over family festivities with children and grandchildren awaiting him. The family promises a quiet celebration.
Fireson garage owned by L V Morris burned with cause undetermined. A barn on the William Wendel farm a mile west of Urbana was destroyed early Friday after being discovered by Mrs. Wendel. Two horses, hogs, 4000 bales of hay, straw, tools and the family dog perished. Ed Burrell owns the farm. No loss estimate yet.
Des Moines based committee decided not to pursue further investigation of Drake Mabry of the Des Moines Tribune and Harrison Weber of the Iowa Daily Press Assn who were accused of publishing reports without consent. The panel asked the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation to check for possible law violations in the premature release of reports by the Automotive Safety Foundation and Public Administration Service. Kenneth Robinson noted there was no law violation according to crime bureau officials.
Edward Mims won a $3,500 judgment against the city of Cedar Rapids for injuries from a August 12, 1958 sidewalk fall near Riverside Recreation Center. Lucille M Carpenter, as Dale H Reuter, lost in a separate suit after seeking $8,772.51 for a January 4, 1959 auto crash in Central City. Jury verdicts were delivered Thursday in Judge Penningroth and Judge Philbrick courts.
Timothy Eugene Shea of Cedar Falls faces Linn district court charges of assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury. He allegedly struck 21 year old Robert Newmire during a confrontation near Third avenue and Twelfth street SE. Newmire required hospital care for facial injuries including a cut requiring ten stitches, a broken tooth, two black eyes, and possible broken nose.
Peter Turner, 20, of 530 Knollwood SE, was fined 300 dollars in district court after pleading guilty to drunk driving. He was arrested Friday before 4 AM following an accident in front of 1734 Grandcave SE. Richard Rindernecht Jr., 21, of 530 Vernon SE, was charged with drunkenness.
Delane Shaheen of 1734 Grandcave owns the subject property. Appearing in municipal court Friday, Turner’s attorney entered an innocent plea to a failure to have control charge. Rindernecht was released on a $30 bond.
Dale E. Anderson an 18 year old of 112 First Ave NW was sentenced to 10 years in Anamosa reformatory after pleading guilty to breaking and entering. He stole coins including old jcoins two silver dollars and other change on December 12 from his own apartment. Sentence runs concurrently with a five year Benton county grand larceny term. Anderson was on bench parole when arrested.
A judgment is entered for Lorraine Hoover against Frank Kut for 1275 dollars on a promissory note. The case records indicate a court action seeking payment on the note and the result in favor of Hoover.
Lowell Henry Kollman 72 a Cedar Rapids resident for four decades died suddenly Thursday afternoon. Born July 8 1899 in Belle Plaine he was married to Sofia Estes in 1924. Survived by his wife a son William L Kollman two sisters and two nephews. Services Tuesday 10:30 am Turner chapel attended by Rev Warren Feller and Trojan Lodge. Burial Cedar Memorial. Master Masons to meet at 9:30 am Tuesday.
Russell Edward Preston a World War II veteran died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 3 p.m. Thursday after a brief illness. Born October 16 1912 in Center Junction he married Lorna Gerdes June 7 1940 at Monticello. He worked for Brinks Inc and served as a rural mail carrier on Cedar Rapids route 1. Surviving wife three sons Thomas Jerold and Jeffrey his mother Mrs Alice Geary two sisters Jean Hodgin and Joyce Nagel. Services 3 p.m. Tuesday Turner Chapel with Rev William Biedermann burial Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Ellen J. Hardenbrook, 83, widow of Frank J. Hardenbrook, died Friday at a Marion nursing home. Born July 16, 1877, in Belleville Kansas, she belonged to First Congregational Church Cedar Rapids and was a former matron of Marion chapter 183 CES. Surviving are her son Creighton of Cedar Rapids, brother James Creighton and sister Nora of Belleville, and four grandchildren. Services Tuesday at 1 30 p.m. in Murdoch chapel Marion with Rev. Richard Wagner. Burial Cedar Memorial Chapel after 11 a.m. Saturday.
George Arduser a druggist with Mc Kesson Robins Inc died after a brief illness Thursday. He lived at 1622 R ave NE and was born October 20 1878. He planned 30 years of service until retirement in 1946.
Monticello native died, survived by daughter Helen Arduser of Cedar Rapids and son Fred Arduser of Des Moines, plus a brother Otto Arduser and sister Mrs Della Blair of Dubuque. Wife died 1957. Funeral at Turner chapel Tuesday 1:30 p.m. with Mount Hermon Lodge service at Cedar Memorial. Master Masons to meet at 1 p.m. for services.

Oiler James C. Lewis of Winston-Salem reported the tanker broke up quickly while he ate chow. He and another crewman described a rough night aboard the stern with two life boats adrift as helicopters and coast guard units aided in the rescue. Chester Reed of Corpus Christi said morale improved after helicopters appeared and the chief engineer assumed command.
Cairo president Nasser warned that if Israel builds an atomic bomb it would trigger war. He said the United Arab Republic would not permit such weapons and threatened to attack aggressor bases. He added that if Israel has atomic bombs, they would pursue them too despite the cost.
Mexico welcomed an estimated 693000 foreign tourists this year, up from about 600000 in 1959. The increase reflects growing interest in Mexico City attractions and regional travel.

The United States and Indonesia signed a $72 million three year aid pact to boost food production and distribution methods. Foreign Minister Subandrio said the agreement counters any belief the U S misunderstands Indonesian aspirations and noted U S aid to Indonesia has reached $12 million in the past decade.
A prematurely born boy weighing under three pounds died at Community hospital in Ephrata after birth on a snowy country road December 13. Named Joseph, he had been in an incubator since birth and was given little chance to live. His mother Mrs. Harry Ros, 27, survived the ordeal.

William C Ballard of Florida Joyce Murdock no address Robert Wullner 17 of 2801 SW and William Easterday 18 of 814 First St SW received suspended sentences. Wullner faces release Saturday at 2 pm then 10 am Tuesday with good behavior release at 2 pm Jan 31. Easterday charged with larceny in the same incident. Ballard charged with writing a false 45 check on a Cedar Rapids bank Nov 12 1955. Murdock charged in collection with forged 25 check cashed at Killian's Oct 24.
