Iowa sees potential for safest driving year in 70 years

Iowa motorists may reach the 2015 record for fewest traffic fatalities since 1944 with 306 deaths by Monday. Officials note 50 percent of fatal crashes involved seat belt use, 43 percent unbelted, and 26 percent pedestrians or two wheeled riders.

Iowa traffic fatalities decline amid safety gains and risk factors

Iowa reports 306 road fatalities as of Monday with 43 percent not wearing seat belts and 26 percent pedestrians or cyclists. Lane departures, largely from drowsy or distracted driving, contributed to many crashes. Officials cite safer cars, wider roadways, rumble strips, and public campaigns as factors toward a goal of zero fatalities.

Dubuque Native Among Six Killed in Afghanistan Bombing

A Dubuque native, Joseph Lemm, a New York City Police Department detective and Air National Guard member, was among six U S service members killed by a death by own action bomber near Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. Also killed was Air Force Maj. Adrianna Vorderbruggen, one of the first openly gay service members to marry. The Taliban claimed responsibility. Other victims include Chester McBride Jr. of Georgia, Michael Anthony Cinco of Texas, and Staff Sgts. Peter Taub and Louis Bonacasa of New York and D C area respectively.
