Asbestos concerns linger at Jefferson and Washington High
Spokeswoman Akwi Nji says the district is not the target of a probe. An August settlement with the Iowa DNR over 2015 Washington High asbestos violations requires a school asbestos video and online posting. The open case involves Abatement Specialties as well as Jefferson’s 2013 geothermal project and related grand jury scrutiny continues.

Clinton man gets over twenty years for assault with gun
Erwin Keith Bell, 36, formerly of Clinton, was sentenced to 248 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to felon in possession of a firearm. He assaulted Mount Vernon officers during a February traffic stop, struck a officer, grabbed a baton, and threatened others. He was found with a loaded .22 Magnum revolver and has eight prior felonies. He must pay 400 restitution to Mount Vernon and serve five years supervised release.

Carlos Matin 21 of Iowa City was arrested December 14 at Taft Avenue and American Legion Road on the scene of a motor vehicle crash and charged with a controlled substance violation for marijuana gear and brownies. Seth W. Pategas 21 of Cedar Rapids was arrested December 11 at Burlington and Front streets in Iowa City after a reported incident.
