President Donald Trump signed a $1.5 trillion tax bill in the Oval Office, capping a major GOP priority before Christmas. The measure, touted as benefiting the American people, was completed before his departure to the Mar a Lago resort in Florida for the holidays.
The Gazette reports that former Agriprocessors executive Sholom Rubashkin, freed from a 27 year term by President Trump, faced sharp criticism from former federal prosecutors who called him a major employer of undocumented workers. They say advisers misled lawmakers and question the decision after his 2009 conviction for bank, mail and wire fraud, money laundering, and related offenses stemming from the 2008 Postville raid. Rubashkin, 57, served eight years and now resides in Monsey New York, as reported by Journal News.
Developer Steve Emerson credits historic preservation tax credits for restoring Cedar Rapids landmarks like the 323 Building, preserving features from the 1909 Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Co. office. The revived 20 percent credits in the new law help fund post flood restoration efforts by both private and public sectors.
The 50 year old Buffalo Creek Dam near Coggon in Linn County is replaced by stair stepped rock rapids in the Wapsipinicon River. Contractors shaved seven feet from the low head dam and began laying rock in December to calm flow, improve safety and environmental conditions. Project costs total about 700000 with 140000 for engineering and five year monitoring planned.
