Lois Marie Holecek of William Holecek was granted custody of her child by Judge C. J. Haas on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. She receives $5 weekly child support and title to household goods. The couple married October 8, 1933 in Cedar Rapids.

At 1 40 pm Thursday a roof fire occurred at the home of Wesley Prenosil 1919 Mescisor street NE with 22 minutes of activity by engine companies 3 6 and hook and ladder. At 4 32 pm dust on hot water pipes at Kresge's First avenue and Third street SE set off a still alarm with 1 minute duration.
Henry Vaclav, 20, route No 3, sentenced to 30 days in the county jail for intoxication. George Tillma and Ralph Swanson, both of Watertown, each fined 5 dollars and costs for improper registration and improper hitching of a trailer to an automobile in Justice H. R. Churchill's court.
Mercy hospital reports a son for Mr. and Mrs. John Wislsel on December 21 at 329 Fifth Avenue SW and a son for Mr. and Mrs. Francis Riley on December 22 at 351 Second Avenue SW. St. Luke's hospital records a daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Kuba on December 21 at 1334 C Street SW and a son for Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Stanley in Lisbon on December 21. High Amana notes a daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Hubert A. Day. Frank Miller Jr. and Albert Jordan announce daughters and sons born December 21 to their families at 1229 Second Street SE and 2212 Tenth Street NW respectively.
A man used two fabrication schemes to secure cash refunds after delivering payments by check. At Newman’s, a $24.99 linen and bedding order was refunded when the buyer claimed a change of mind. At Killian’s, a $71.35 coat was purchased with a check, then returned for a cash refund after the check proved worthless. Police were alerted as the suspect vanished.
Frank M. Rush 1134 First Avenue East, an old age pensioner, denied in a property examination before Judge C. J. Haas that he ever told attorney E. J. Dahms he had over $8,000 in currency or showed pension checks from the state of Iowa. Officials noted Rush has received old age grants since 1934 and was briefly suspended last July amid garnishment concerns, later reinstated at $18 per month. Rush also denied transferring money to a Rock Island bank and claimed a Franks account name was used to shield possible judgments. he said the lodging rooms at 1132 First Avenue East are operated by Rose Kangley.
Thursday filings in Linn County district court show multiple note suits and judgments. William Goldsberry sues Ellen Brookman and others for 3832.50, with L O Hatch named in a 308.77 note action. Other cases include Marak Steffer Implement co and Tipton State Bank notes, plus Sedlacek, Miner, and Swartzbaugh actions. A landlord attachment by Raymond Wertz and a vehicle damage case by Milo Simanek headline the docket. Ruth A. Krotz seeks divorce from Wesley Krotz with custody and name restoration requests.
Vera Teau sant and Rosalie Gardner as administratrices of William C. Langguth estate received authority to settle up to 750 dollars of any claims against Archie C. Beatty related to fatal injuries to Langguth. A 7,500 dollar death claim suit was filed by the administratrices against Beatty.
In Cedar Rapids 19 year old Christy Niedermayer, through his mother Rose, sues Iowa Electric Light and Power for 35000 in a personal injury action alleging burns allegedly received on the High Line.
Mrs. Mary C. Weeks Aged 85 wife of George Weeks died at her daughter s home in Cedar Rapids after a long illness She celebrated 70 years of marriage on November 22 1869 born Mary Cecelia Metz near Edgewood The survivor list includes husband three daughters one son ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren Funeral services will be at the old family home in Aurora Sunday at 1 pm with burial in Madison Cemetery Friends may call at Beatty chapel until 10 am Sunday
A petition describes Niedermayer injured Sept 2 1938 seven miles west of Cedar Rapids while guiding a truck carrying a boxcar under a 6 600-volt line. He alleges permanent injuries to his left hip right arm and shoulder left hand and impaired sight from the incident.
Ruppert Thiessen filed a $5,000 personal injury case against Ethel B. Hart owner of Century Cab and John W. Baird. The petition says a taxicab he rode in collided with a truck on Highway No. 30 six miles east of Cedar Rapids on the night of February 16.
Judge H C Ring approved $2,000 jointly as administrators fees for Mary A Redmond and Thomas M Redmond in the William H Redmond estate who died November 5 1938. M W O Rieley and Thomas L Woods were approved $2,000 jointly as attorneys fees.
The November term of Linn county district court was adjourned late Thursday by Judges C. J. Haas and H. C. Ring.
George Herrick, 67, sues to obtain a one half interest in a Cedar Rapids property. He alleges he agreed to furnish 1600 dollars and joined with Lara Jeffcot and Dexter A Jeffcot in a 1938 purchase. He says a related keep and care agreement has been terminated by the defendants.
Cedar Rapids plaintiff Mrs. Adai Traub sues W. A. Risk alleging a fall on an icy sidewalk beside a down spout at Risk's grocery store 700 Sixth Street SE on the evening of January 31. She seeks 7890 dollars for a broken right arm and related injuries.
Ralph Faidley files a divorce action against Edith A Faidley on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. The couple were married in Cedar Rapids on June 6 1937.
E. H. Owen doing business as the Standard Tire company sues Virgil Leidigh and Mrs. Virgil Leidigh in a contract action for 159 dollars and 26 cents.
Judge C J Haas enters an $8507 default judgment against Mort A Blum for the McCaskey Register company in a salesman's account dispute. The plaintiff claims the total is due.
A. W. Badger files a $150 note case against Mrs. Golda Ho craffer and Lloyd G. Hocraffer. The action seeks repayment of the disputed sum in a civil court.
Dr. George W. Gore Jr., Benton physician, pled guilty to murder of Carl Choisser Benton editor-attorney. He received a 14 year prison term after being granted a new trial despite a prior conviction that carried death.

Judge Thomas B. Powell let the driver pay 1.50 costs after a guilty plea by M. W. O Rieley for Fisher in police court. The Nov. 29 crash injured Jimmie Weaver, son of Cedar Memorial park caretaker, in a bicycle and truck collision. Prosecutor said brakes did not cause the accident and O Rieley noted repairs were completed.
D L Stearns reports loss of a black leather billfold on Third avenue between Third and Fourth streets SE. It contained a bank draft for $800 payable to him, $4 in cash and $28 in checks. He may have left it in a store after shopping Thursday night.
The Agriculture Department estimates 31,985,000 pigs produced on farms from June 1 to December 1 1939, up 16 percent from 1938 fall crop. The 1939 spring crop was 20 percent larger, totaling 84,302,000 head, the largest in 17 years with regional shifts—largest gains in the south, smaller in the western belt, and moderate in the eastern belt. Major state tallies include Illinois 7,429,000 fall plus 2,869,000 spring, Iowa 14,385,000 fall and 3,710,000 spring, Missouri 4,899,000 fall and 2,265,000 spring, Minnesota 5,503,000 fall and 1,193,000 spring.
Des Moines AP reports 1939 Iowa pig crop up 16 percent reaching 14.385 million head. Federal statistician Leslie M. Carl notes hog marketing accounts for about two-fifths of farmers cash income. Fall crop tops 3.71 million head, up from 3.21 million a year earlier. 1938 total was 12.433 million.
Charles Frondle of Belle Plaine pled not guilty to possessing 14 ounces of marihuana without federal taxes paid. Bond set at 3500 remained unpaid and Frondle remanded to Linn county jail. A preliminary hearing was set for January 3 at 9 30 a m. He was arrested by Benton county officers while tracing stolen railroad property and brought to Cedar Rapids by U S marshal Joe Petrus. Miller of the alcohol tax unit aided the case.
Webster County supervisors and the Webster County Medical Society announce a contract to launch a medical relief clinic modeled on Linn county. The plan, based on the Linn program, will cost Webster County $2,000 per month. A study committee formed by the board and medical society reviewed the Linn approach.
The Young Men's Bureau of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce sold 2042 tickets for the film Ninotchka at the Paramount theater last weekend. Chairman Jack Rice reported at the annual Christmas party that 10 percent of net receipts was placed in a special project fund and $116.41 was given to Cedar Rapids Winter Sports, Inc. Year end reports followed and the meeting closed with Iowa Wisconsin football film showings.
Two people were killed and at least three seriously injured when the St. Louis bridge near Notre Dame collapsed after a heavy barge struck its central arch. Police report a gas main exploded as the bridge fell, sending pedestrians and vehicles into the Seine between Ile St. Louis and Ile de la Cite.
Washington dispatch reports former Olympic Games wrestler William Benedict Finley Quinn, 38, arrested in San Francisco for a jewel theft dating back three years. The Empress Josephine emerald, valued at $47,000, allegedly stayed hidden as he planned disposal after hiding it since his 19th year in the games.

Floyd H Knapp and Bruce A West elected first and second vice presidents with Malcolm V Bolton as secretary and Henry S Ely as treasurer. Next meeting set for Jan 8.

Charles Laurance hosted a program as the Beethoven club under Helen Kacena Stark performed carols and soloist Lois Critchett Brown sang. Dr. David I Berger delivered the Christmas message, stressing religion’s role in enlarging and beautifying human life.
In Genthin near Berlin two passenger trains collided at 1 a.m. during a Christmas travel rush. The Berlin Neukirchen express struck an unscheduled Berlin Cologne train, derailing multiple cars. The disaster adds to eight wrecks since the war began, bringing totals to 193 dead and over 158 injured. Genthin lies about 50 miles southwest of Berlin en route to Magdeburg.
