Jersey Auction Near Ryan Nets Strong Farm Sale
Thirty two Jerseys averaged 115 dollars at the Ed Mangold closing out sale two miles east of Ryan. Top cow brought 156 dollars and a two year old bull 120 dollars. Eight horses averaged 90 dollars with high horses at 300 dollars. Other items included soy hay five sixty a ton corn forty six cents a bushel oats thirty eight cents. A corn binder sold for 155 dollars and a side delivery rake for 75 dollars. The sale totaled 7000 dollars with Cecile Ryan of Manchester acting as auctioneer.

Iowa farms produced 24,876,000 tons of feed grains in 1939, down from 25,539,000 last year but above the 1928–37 average. Oats fell from 209,020,000 to 154,818,000 bushels, while corn for ensilage declined. Corn yield averaged 52 bushels per acre, with total corn at 503,776,000 bushels, second only to 1932. Soybeans rose to 10,227,000 bushels from 6,741,000, barley 13,793,000 from 13,634,000, and all wheat 6,490,000 from 9,284,000.

Breakenridge reports brome pastures beat bluegrass for beef per acre
Beef per acre on brome pasture averaging 348.5 pounds surpasses bluegrass gains of 241 and 265 pounds on adjacent pastures. Breakenridge fed 308 head from Texas over 78 acres of brome and 160 acres of bluegrass, with total feed cost 4458.27 and average gain per day 2.28 pounds on brome versus 2.08 on bluegrass.
