The elder McNear, who opposed union demands as featherbedding and rode picket lines in an armored car, was slain while strolling near his home. The crime remains unsolved. His son George P. McNear III died in the South Pacific in World War II, another son John was killed in an Italian Alps avalanche in 1950, and a daughter Elizabeth and widow survive. A plane crash near Mt Hawley airport killed the family party en route to Florida.
In Brighton Michigan two cars collided and both drivers identified themselves as Mrs. Carl Bidwell. The two Bidwell families are not related.
