Buddhist Monastery Sits Guarded by Troops in Muslim South
In Yala Pattani Narathiwat provinces the Arakatanaram monastery now sits inside a security ring of concertina wire and soldiers. Buddhist villagers say distrust grew since troops arrived last spring and Muslims distance themselves. Monk abbot Hakaneh Hanoyolo notes fewer Muslims visit the temple. Soldiers insist they protect both communities and seek peace.
