The Iowa Army National Guard aims to shore up its ranks after missing recruitment goals. Top officials say boosting retention bonuses from 5000 to 15000 dollars for six year renewals will help attract and keep servicemembers in a tougher market. First time recruits face higher incentives as well.
The National Guard aims for 350000 with 63000 recruit target in 2005 but trails by about 10000. Iowa Guard reports 7559 authorized positions filled and boosts recruiters from 2700 to 4100. Insurgents strike Iraq with two major blasts and a daylight shooting targeting election officials. Car bombs at a Baghdad bus terminal kill 14 and wound 30 while a Najaf market blast kills 48 and injures over 90. The surge comes weeks before the January 30 vote.

A survey shows American adults on a low carb diet peaked near 10 percent in February and by November fell below 5 percent with few following the diet. Biweekly February figures show 4.9 percent by early November and only one of four significantly cutting carbs.
