The Marion Independent will run a holiday recreation program for elementary students in the district. Sessions are at Washington, Emerson and Mentzer elementary gyms on Dec 29 and 30 with times 9 am to noon for grades 4–6 and 1 pm to 3 pm for grades 1–3. Attendance is open to all three sessions.
Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Charles Larson announced increased trooper patrols aimed at drinking drivers during the holiday season. Twenty new troopers will serve metropolitan areas with high traffic fatalities, allowing veterans to target drunk-driving enforcement especially in evenings and early mornings near taverns. He cautioned that December fatalities tend to rise and noted last year's drop may reflect enforcement, with arrests also higher than average.
Washington AP Three of President Ford's children will fly to Vail Colorado on Saturday aboard a C-141 military cargo plane to start their Christmas skiing vacation early. Susan Steve and Michael Ford and Michael's wife Gayle will travel to Grand Junction. The plane carries communications and support equipment for the presidential visit and the trip is at no cost to the taxpayer.
Marion police arrested Ed win L Darling, 700 Thirty Fifth street, Friday at 1 05 a m and charged him with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Officers observed Darling attempting to make a right turn at Sixth avenue and Marion boulevard and took him to the Linn county jail. Darling remained in custo dy Friday afternoon under 500 bond. A federal judge in San Francisco denied Hearst defense access to government files in the Patricia Hearst bank robbery case. Chief Judge Oliver Carter said the defense failed to show a compelling need for unrestricted access given questions about her memory and the psychiatrists’ notes on competency.
Wendy Yoshimura, once roommate of Patricia Hearst, was freed on bail from Santa Rita jail after a judge lowered her bail to 25000 dollars. She pledged support for her community and said she would pursue an adequate defense while living with UC Berkeley professor Paul Takagi and wife until the case proceeds.
Addis Ababa hosts an OAU summit scheduled January 10 to 12 to address the Angola crisis with a ministerial council meeting on January 8 and 9. The conference follows months of postponements amid international arms and aid involvement.
WARSAW N Y AP two grand juries investigating the 1971 Attica prison revolt found insufficient grounds to indict four state policemen and three Attica guards. The juries reported no bills on murder or perjury charges against officers, though they previously considered various counts. Both panels said more work remains as charges continue to be reviewed.
Patricia Hearst was taken from San Mateo county jail to a private doctor for an eye examination, with confirmation from Dr Michael Maddalena’s office. A nurse said she looked fine and there are no plans for a return visit. Officials noted she has conjunctivitis while awaiting trial on federal bank robbery charges.
Io wa's first women state troopers Julie E. Gay and Gayle P. Adrian joined 30 male cadets as 32 new peace officers graduated from the Iowa Department of Public Safety basic training at Camp Dodge. They received diplomas and trooper badges from Gov. Robert D. Ray and Public Safety Commissioner Charles W. Larson. Gay will staff Post No. 2 in Winterset and Adrian Post No. 1 in Des Moines.
Boston authorities lost a bid to delay the federal receivership of South Boston High School as the first circuit court scheduled filings on the merits. The panel set Jan 6 for briefs and Jan 9 for a full hearing while teachers circulated mass transfer requests amid Garrity’s criticism of the school’s education.

The Cedar Rapids Airport Commission announces a relocation assistance program for eligible residents. Applicants must have occupied the property at least ninety days and future payments cover moving costs and decently maintained housing. Claims must be filed within one month of eligibility. the commission may require sale of the home to the commission’s representative if relocation is involved.
