Marion district to offer holiday recreation program

The Marion Independent will run a holiday recreation program for elementary students in the district. Sessions are at Washington, Emerson and Mentzer elementary gyms on Dec 29 and 30 with times 9 am to noon for grades 4–6 and 1 pm to 3 pm for grades 1–3. Attendance is open to all three sessions.

Troopers Focus on Drunk Drivers in Holiday Patrols

Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Charles Larson announced increased trooper patrols aimed at drinking drivers during the holiday season. Twenty new troopers will serve metropolitan areas with high traffic fatalities, allowing veterans to target drunk-driving enforcement especially in evenings and early mornings near taverns. He cautioned that December fatalities tend to rise and noted last year's drop may reflect enforcement, with arrests also higher than average.

Ford Children Leaving Early for Christmas Ski Trip

Washington AP Three of President Ford's children will fly to Vail Colorado on Saturday aboard a C-141 military cargo plane to start their Christmas skiing vacation early. Susan Steve and Michael Ford and Michael's wife Gayle will travel to Grand Junction. The plane carries communications and support equipment for the presidential visit and the trip is at no cost to the taxpayer.

Marion Man Charged With Drunken Driving

Marion police arrested Ed win L Darling, 700 Thirty Fifth street, Friday at 1 05 a m and charged him with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Officers observed Darling attempting to make a right turn at Sixth avenue and Marion boulevard and took him to the Linn county jail. Darling remained in custo dy Friday afternoon under 500 bond. Judge Denies Hearst Access to Government Files

A federal judge in San Francisco denied Hearst defense access to government files in the Patricia Hearst bank robbery case. Chief Judge Oliver Carter said the defense failed to show a compelling need for unrestricted access given questions about her memory and the psychiatrists’ notes on competency.

No Attica Indictments By Two Grand Juries

Hearst Receives Eye Examination in Burlingame

First women are troopers graduate from Iowa academy
