British reaction centers on the scuttling of the German liner Columbus and the pocket battleship Graf Spee and the Arauca’s flight to Port Everglades. Reports claim Allied sea dominance and rising German merchant losses to 41 ships totaling about 224000 tons. Navy men cite scuttling as prudent and Graf Spee’s end as inglorious.
