Police in New York say five men robbed the Hotel Carlyle safe deposits, fled when alerted. President Carter canceled a Cabinet meeting to focus on a 1978 economic policy package with aides and Mondale/Eizenstat guiding priorities.

High altitude blasts shake homes from coast to coast
Researchers at Columbia University and a Pentagon spokesman weighed in as a series of high altitude explosions rattled windows from Connecticut to South Carolina. acoustical expert William Donn reported seven separate booms detected by air pressure instruments, with two on December 2 and five more the following Thursday. The blasts were far too strong for aircraft, and no seismic activity or military tests were identified to explain them. Residents described a loud shock that rattled homes and even broke windows in some cases.
