A 22 ton truck crane fell into a six foot pit beside the Illinois Central Gulf turntable at Fifth Street and D Avenue NE in Cedar Rapids. No injuries were reported as Timbers in the 75 year old platform collapsed while backing the crane. The turntable is out of service until the crane is removed and debris cleared. The crane is used for lifting rails and maintenance work.
Illinois Attorney General William Scott says 45 states have accepted a $40 million settlement with General Motors over engine swaps in Oldsmobiles Buicks and Pontiacs. Each affected car owner will receive $200 and a two year warranty transferable on sale. Iowa California Louisiana Kentucky and Tennessee did not sign.
