Simon Kills Move by U S For Tax on Fringe Benefits
Treasury Secretary William Simon rejected a general rule taxing free fringe benefits for employees and shelved about a dozen revenue rulings. The move would have taxed airline worker travel discounts, store employee discounts, and other perks. It leaves fringe benefits largely untaxed for now, with tax policy returning to case by case consideration based on individual facts.
