Jury Deadlock Seen In Sam Sheppard Murder Trial

In Cleveland AP reported the Sheppard murder trial jury may be deadlocked over guilt or degree. The jurors returned to deliberations for a second day with no verdict. If guilty, a first degree murder charge could bring the death penalty. prosecutors note possible nonpremeditated factors.

National Labor Board backs hot cargo clauses in unions

The National Labor Relations Board upheld 3-2 the validity of hot cargo clauses in labor contracts. It also ruled unions cannot enforce such clauses if an employer repudiates the agreement. The clauses allow workers to refuse handling freight to or from a rival employer in a labor dispute.

New Brunswick New Jersey residents show a shift back to pre TV habits as the Cunningham and Walsh survey for 1954 notes gains in morning radio and newspaper reading while movie attendance and magazines rebound. Dog Shoots Master at Dahl Farm

A wire-haired fox terrier named Terry shot and wounded 12-year-old David Dahl at the Dahl family farm near New Liberty. David had placed a .22 rifle against a loft ladder when Terry jumped on it, triggering the gun and injuring his right hand and thigh. He was treated by a London doctor and released.

Man Gets Year In Slaying Plot

J Willard Durden an Orlando contractor was sentenced to one year in jail after a jury convicted him of conspiring with the late Emmett Donnelly to murder clients for profit. Donnelly killed himself when the plot was exposed. The trial covered one conspiracy to kill Mrs Byrd Thompson Roach with other charges pending.

Iowa Near All Time Death Toll With 10 More Fatalities

Iowa counted four more traffic deaths bringing the 1954 total to 615 seven weeks into the year. Victims include George Lower 44 owner of Lower Truck Co Independence Will Klinkel 59 an employee of Lower William Duis 35 Emmetsburg farmer Jacob Fischer 81 Rockwell City. Lower and Klinkel died in a Friday 7 p.m. head on collision near Hazleton blamed on slick snow packed highways. A Minneapolis semi driven by Willard Pearson jackknifed and struck their car. Pearson suffered a forehead gash and minor injuries. Duis died in a collision with a Rock Island train near Emmetsburg. Fischer died at a Lake City hospital from injuries in an earlier crash near Rockwell City.

McCarthy Group Stops Counting Signatures

Retired Rear Admiral John G Crommelin said Americans Mobilizing for Justice stopped counting petitions protesting Sen. McCarthy after reaching 2 300 000 signatures. The group sought 10 million and planned to sort remaining petitions by state though Crommelin called further counting unnecessary. McCarthy was condemned by the senate on December 2.

Antone Barboza reported a thief broke into his home and stole $500 in dimes saved over nine years for his son Paul 9 who suffers from epilepsy. Police are investigating the burglary in Fall River Massachusetts.

Five Survivors Rescued From Idlewild Water Crash

An Italian DC-6 from Rome and Milan crashed into a pier at Idlewild Airport near Jamaica Bay. Five survivors were reported from the waters as rescuers fought flames and confusion over casualties. The elderly man rescued cried out for his wife amid the chaotic scene.

Snowfall Targets Eastern Iowa With Lingering Snow

Light snow is forecast for Eastern Iowa tonight and Sunday while temperatures stay in the upper 20s to low 30s. Through Saturday roads remain snow packed north of a line from Dubuque to Manchester to Marengo, with sheltered routes on highways 6 and 30 near normal. Cedar Rapids reports almost four inches on Saturday morning with a 27 degree temperature at 2 30, following a 81 degree high and 27 degree low Friday.

German Railway Wreck Kills 14 in Pre-Dawn Collision

A train collision near Dortmund killed fourteen people and injured thirty seven, including many children on a holiday special carrying 500 schoolchildren home for Christmas. The badly damaged regular train did not derail and continued to Düsseldorf hours later. The victims were mostly German adults. the cause remained under investigation.

Vessels Collide In Fog and Rain Off Cape May

Two ships collided in the Delaware river channel during fog and rain. A small fire on the tanker Atlantic Cape Town was quickly extinguished with no serious injuries reported. The crash occurred 28 miles off Cape May and involved the tanker Atlantic Cape Town and the United Fruit freighter Maya.
