Services are announced for Mrs Jimmie Novak of 614 Sixth Street SE to be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Brush chapel with Rev H L Sunderman of St Andrew's Evangelical United Brethren Church officiating. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday. Albert F Kysilka 50 of 2030 E Avenue NE dies at Cedar Rapids hospital after illness. Born in Svata Katerina Czechoslovakia on April 23 1904 he came to Cedar Rapids in 1950. He is survived by his wife Rose and two children. Services Saturday at 2 p.m. in Janeba funeral home with burial in Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday.
Pfc. Melvin D. Noggle, son of Mr and Mrs John Noggle of 1226 Third Street NW, will be honored in Teahen chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday with burial at Linwood cemetery where VFW post 788 will conduct military rites. He died November 29 in Germany from injuries in an automobile accident. Friends may visit the residence until 9 a.m. Saturday and at the chapel after 11 a.m.
Funeral services for Frank F. Trachta of 2038 D street SW will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Brosh chapel with Theodore B. Hlubucek officiating. Friends may call at the chapel after 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Nelson A. Hale a former Cedar Rapids resident died Friday morning in Decatur Georgia. He is survived by his wife a son Nelson Jr four grandchildren and his brother Dean L Hale of 1041 Twentieth street SE.
Oscar Dial aged 34 and Fred Dial aged 25, two white farmer brothers from Birmingham, Alabama, were each sentenced by U S District Judge Seybourne H Lynne to 18 months in prison for holding enslaved Black people. Oscar must start December 24 while Fred can wait until August due to illness and farm needs.
A Tipton rural intersection crash injures 22 students and a local veterinarian driver. Dr Dwight Faulkner 28 suffered throat chest injuries and underwent tracheotomy. Bus driver J Mear Jennings 51 had cuts and bruises. Students treated locally. Faulkner in Iowa City hospital.
President Eisenhower endorses a four year national manpower plan to expand reserves and train 100000 youths annually for military service. The program seeks to hold active forces around three million with flexible mobilization and options for two to four year enlistments and callable reserves.
Epoxy, a plastic hardening at room temperature, serves as a near steel substitute in 1955 auto tooling. It avoids ore mining and high heat processing, reduces costs and lead times, and yields lighter, dimensionally stable fixtures. Bakelite, a Union Carbide unit, produces the resin and hardeners.

Nebraska's Hazel Abel 66 resigns December 31 freeing time for Curtis to join the Senate earlier and gain seniority. Governor Crosby praises the move as a generous gesture while Abel explains it could benefit Nebraska over time. Abel was appointed to fill Eve Bowring's term and Curtis will begin a full six-year term on January 3.
Davenport police found a 7-foot metal “monster” grappling with a St. Ambrose student but learned it was a homemade robot. Ray Emler 20 and Charles Schadel 17 built the device from sheet metal while studying metal craft. Schadel said he was giving a “command” when the arm swung and struck him. They were released after questioning.
President Eisenhower received two Christmas plane models for his grandson David during a ceremony presenting the Collier Trophy for supersonic fighter development. Douglas and North American Aviation leaders offered the models praising their work on the F4D and F-100.
In Ohio the kissin bridges are fading from view as traffic modernizes. Gov Lausche denies any plan to tear them down and cites 327 bridges in total including 16 on the state highway system. Local librarian Will Collins notes covers shield joints and trusses rather than romance or shelter.
A federal grand jury indicted Harvard professor Wendell Hinkle Furry and former teaching fellow Leon Kamin for contempt of the senate. They allegedly refused to answer questions from Senator McCarthy during a January 15 Boston session of the Permanent Investigations Subcommittee.
Irving Smith, a 44 year old Milwaukee man with multiple state holds, pled guilty to a five year old false check charge and received a one year county jail term. Judge Charles Penningroth suspended eight months of the sentence on restitution of 215 dollars within six months after release. He allegedly passed the check to buy a used car and later sold it for 100 dollars. Cedar Rapids police earlier returned him to Linn county to face the charge.
William H. Klein sues Swift and Company and Carl F. Farwell for 9906.50 in damages from a September 2 1953 collision in Muscatine County. The jury trial began Monday with final arguments completed Friday before Judge Floyd Philbrick submitted the case.
Louis Levin of Denver sues George and Clara Hobel of Cedar Rapids for 46747.54 dollars claiming head shoulder chest pelvis and leg injuries and a brain concussion from a car collision on June 18 eight miles west of Cedar Rapids on highway 30 where Levin rode as a passenger with Richard Isenberg driving.
E. J. Gillis of Marion pled guilty to a false pretenses charge and received a three months suspended sentence in Linn county jail. He was accused of taking an order for two shirts from Earl Knapp and cashing an $11.84 check with no delivery. Restitution was made, Judge Charles Penningroth noted.
Oscar Perrigo age 47 of 1711 E avenue NE Friday pled innocent to a larceny charge in Judge Charles Penningroth court. Bond set at $1,000. Perrigo arrested by Cedar Rapids detectives for allegedly taking a coat owned by Nellie Feuss of 2924 Woodland drive SW from the back of a booth in the Alibi tavern.
Plaintiffs R Michael Ford Katherine Ford and Elizabeth Lamb moved to dismiss a rent suit against Elmer Pecka Phyllis Pecka Joseph Vondracek and Mary Vondracek over alleged rent for a cafe at 316 Second Avenue SE. Also H S Ersland sued Charles H Simpkins for 1031.93 on six promissory notes. A divorce suit by Jim J Jones against Lumeda Jones was dismissed by Jones.
In Vatican City Pope Pius XII shows an abnormally fast pulse raising concern among doctors. He has been weakening steadily in recent days as medical teams monitor his condition.
Senator McCarthy R Wis returns from a nine day break with his elbow healing but still causing some discomfort his wife reports improvement though not fully recovered.
The U S Seventh Fleet with air force units completed a massive ten day Western Pacific exercise unseen by the public. China denounced the maneuvers as armed intimidation while the United States said plans were months in the making and unrelated to a new security pact. The operation showed ships and naval aircraft around the Formosan Strait and off the Asian mainland as patrols continued.

Lulu Hayes chief deputy to Sheriff Orland Hayes in Washington Court House Ohio arrested Paul Johnson 28 and Hank Evans 30 after identifying them from a Waterloo Indiana burglary description. Loot valued at 400 was found in their car and Johnsons mothers home.
Ames UP reports 227 graduates at Iowa State College ceremony. Thirty PhD degrees, thirty two science degrees, one hundred sixty three bachelor of science degrees and two farm operation certificates were awarded. Fourty five ROTC students received commissions in the armed services.
Dr. Richard C. Spencer of Coe College spoke at the Roosevelt hotel under the High Twelve banner. He compared U S and British political mechanics noting the U S President needs congressional authorization while Britain is driven by the Commons. He argued local government strength shapes national policy and contrasts with the British system where officials are directly accountable to the Commons.
Arthur L. Bye 62 of 30 Blake Terrace SE named official federal court reporter for the Northern district of Iowa by Judge Henry N. Graven. Appointed to succeed Carl V. Reilly, effective January 15, Bye has served as court reporter since 1917 and will reside in Cedar Rapids. He is a Cedar Rapids school board former member and Linn County Bar Association member with ties to Northwood Keokuk and Cedar Rapids courts.
