North China reports pledge by Gen Fu Tso yi to defend Peiping to the last man as Nationalists and Communists clash within miles of the ancient capital. Reds reportedly hold airfield south of Peiping while government moves signal strategic setbacks near Nanking.
A Southern Pacific City of San Francisco derailed five miles west of Great Salt Lake near Ogden as 15 cars stayed upright. Automatic safety equipment saved 254 passengers from injury or death after a wheel on the lead baggage car broke, causing the train to split and roll across desert terrain.
Cedar Rapids police will patrol downtown during the Christmas shopping season to curb jaywalking and double parking. A school teacher Mrs. Allison Andrews and four students were injured when their car sideswiped another vehicle and went into a ditch near Thirty-sixth Avenue SE. The group, from Cedar Rapids Solon and Nada Schroeder, were taken to Mercy hospital for treatment.
Mrs. Whitaker Chambers posted $1,000 bail on a charge of causing the death of pedestrian Maggie Thomas after a car struck her Friday night in Baltimore. Chambers and his wife appeared in magistrate court after he testified in a federal grand jury in New York. The couple then left for their Westminster farm.
Rain persisted for the 17th day over Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, hindering relief. Officials report 310 bodies recovered, 7,000 homeless, and over 1,000 injured. Plattsmouth Nebraska authorities concluded the Horning sisters died in a murder and death by own action after Blanche Horning 76 was found in the burning ruins and Olive Horning 86 was discovered beaten in bed. Investigators suspect Blanche killed Olive then self destructed.
Loyal Meek reports Cedar Rapids prep gridiron hopes for a new stadium faded after bids exceeded estimates by about $200,000. Bids for Cleveland and Kenwood elementary schools were closer to estimates, while the board delayed a final decision until Wednesday after architects tabulate results. Kenwood bids around 663000 and Cleveland about 522000 versus estimates of 630000 and 517000.
The Cedar Rapids murder case centers on a three inch clasp knife said to have been Hartman's. Mrs. Alvin Steinke, Hartman’s St. Louis landlady, testified Hartman owned the blade and carried it. Dr. Robert Rutledge admits taking the knife during a fatal struggle but denies driving it into Hartman.
A winter storm blanketed Iowa on Saturday with slick streets in Cedar Rapids where 1.5 inches of snow fell by 2:30 p.m. Police received numerous calls and could not send cars to all incidents. Snow was heavy in northern Iowa with up to two inches. highway 30 near Dewitt was slick. The day brought mixed travel notes as planes and buses ran on time and trains lagged due to holiday traffic.
