Iowa, in Detroit, fell 34 30 to Wayne University as sophomore Bill Collins and Len Myron fueled Wayne with eight points in seven minutes. Hawkeyes shot poorly and lagged after intermission, allowing Wayne to claim its first Big Ten crossover victory.
Nile Kinnick Iowa All-America halfback was voted Western conference most valuable player by Big Ten coaches officials and Tribune staff. He led with first place votes though not unanimous, Har mon of Wisconsin finished second. The Tribune will present a silver football to Kinnick.
A descriptive spread recalls Iowa sports luminaries at a civic dinner. Figures include Dennis with George Shimek, Hines as toastmaster, and Dempsy Jones delivering a comedy note. Jim Nash and Jerry Fort combined for 33 points as Grinnell beat Coe 47 to 35 in a Midwest Conference game on Grinnell's floor. Nash sparked the Pioneer offense with a quick start and Grinnell built a double figure lead before coasting to the victory.
Northwestern tops Pittsburgh 39 to 33 in Evanston Saturday night for their third straight non-conference win. Sam Malanovich Melvin Port Jimmy Klein Ed Straleski and George Kocheran scored for the Panthers while Lester Harman led Northwestern with 14 points and Bob Shepard added 12.
Minnesota basketball raced to a 23-11 first half edge and then withstood a South Dakota challenge to win 35-28 Saturday night. The Gophers built a commanding lead early and held on to seal the victory.
Michigan's basketball team upset Notre Dame 41 to 39 in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines trailed 9-0 early but surged with a fast break, taking a 22-18 halftime lead and holding on as Notre Dame narrowed the gap late. Riska scored twice in the final minute to seal the win.
TAIT CUMMINS profiles Pete Enich and his son Big Mike Enich, captain-elect of the University of Iowa football team. The piece portrays a penniless Serbian immigrant who arrived in 1906, endured hardship in Chicago, and built a new life in the United States with hard work at Illinois Steel and support from fellow Serbians. University of Chicago used a 6-4 captain and strong defense to race to an 18-1 lead and dominate Armour Institute 52 to 27. Lounsbury Stampf and Richardson paced the scoring while Armour’s Captain Bill Scherer sparked a late rally.
Ohio State freshmen dominated Wooster 64 to 35 in Columbus Saturday night before 2 555 fans. Gil Michelson led with 15 points as Buckeye sophomores controlled both ends. McLain and Goss contributed consistently to a 25 16 halftime advantage and the team used 15 players, 11 sophomores.
Western Kentucky State defeated St Ambrose 40 32 in the first game of a double header in Moline Illinois. The Hilltoppers used a rangy attack to draw ahead while St Ambrose fought hard to stay in contention throughout the contest.
Editor note recalls Earl Coughlin, Gazette sports editor and Hawkeye booster, who met coach Dr. Eddie Anderson in Iowa City for a three hour interview. The piece, written before Coughlin’s untimely death on April 14, captured optimism about Iowa football prospects for the 1939 season and reflected on past lean years.
Loras College beat Lawrence 28 to 22 in Dubuque on Saturday night as Loras led 13 11 at halftime and maintained the edge throughout a tight basket ball contest. Lawrence suffered its second loss of a three game Iowa trip.
