Wild turkeys expand in Iowa open gobbler season near Amana
The Iowa Conservation Commission announced a limited open season for gobblers next spring in east-central Iowa centered around the Amana area. From an initial stocking of 18 birds, turkey numbers along the Towa River timber have grown enough to support hunting in a 12 by 24 mile zone, with additional zones in the northeast and along the southern border. Wildlife biologist Lee Gladfelter notes surveys show growth without harming the flock, and the Amana Society and its hunting committee have been coordinating the effort.
