Retail sales rise modestly in November across most categories
U S retailers posted a 0.1 percent gain in November, below forecasts, following a 0.6 percent revision for October. Excluding autos and gas, sales rose 0.2 percent as consumers continued to spend in restaurants and furniture stores amid discounting and steady wage gains. Receipts at gasoline stations and auto dealers moved in opposite directions, with auto sales down 0.5 percent—the steepest fall since March.
