The 33rd annual Young Columbus Contest grand prize goes to two Gazette carriers for a 10 day Ireland trip. The Gazette and Parade magazine sponsor the event. Page 2A notes this milestone.
Secretary of State Shultz announced the United States would begin direct talks with the Palestine Liberation Organization. He credited Yasser Arafat's clarification of Israel's right to exist and said Reagan and Bush backed sending Ambassador Pelletreau to Tunis to open negotiations.
Cedar Rapids Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jaeger will appoint a new acting chief as James Barnes leaves after a 90 day term. If no appointment is made, Administrative Assistant Chief John Erger will assume chief duties. The council signed orders to remove Barnes following Iowa AG staff opinion.
President elect George Bush selects Clayton Yeutter to head the agriculture department saying the appointment sends a message to trading partners about opening new markets. Yeutter, a Nebraska lawyer and rancher, promises to tackle difficult agricultural issues with his negotiating style.
University of Iowa President Hunter Rawlings III says Iowa should invest rising state revenue in higher education, tying future tuition hikes to inflation. He argues momentum exists and urges bold action rather than caution to accelerate economic growth, speaking at a governor's hearing on Regents funding.
Woods & Pool Economics projects Iowa's population rising 3.4 percent to 2,948,000 by 2010, the slowest among states. Mississippi would grow 6.2 percent. Revised figures cut 2010 Iowa estimates by about 100,000 from last year. Experts say growth will average around 2,000 annually for the next decade.
A top ten ranking shows New Hampshire leading with 61 percent growth followed by Nevada 59 percent Arizona 56.3 percent Florida 55.1 percent Alaska 51.8 percent California 39.2 percent New Mexico 37.2 percent Utah 37 percent Georgia 34.3 percent and Texas 32.3 percent.
