City denied new trial in boy-in-sewer case
Johnson County District Court Judge Ansel Chapman denied the city's request for a new trial in the Cedar Rapids boy swept into a rain swollen Iowa City culvert two years ago. He found the city had a fair trial, evidence supported the $93,200 damages award, and the videotape of That Incredible was a fair aid to the jury. The incident occurred near Highway 6 and Rocky Shore Drive in June 1981, with Connie Schmitz seeking damages for her son Steven now 13.
