Visa checks OK'd pending ruling on Iranian students

NATO proposes new arms talks with Soviet Union

NATO foreign ministers from 15 nations urged the Soviet Union and its allies to join ambitious postwar arms control talks. The communique praised a plan for 572 new missiles in Europe and a five point reduction proposal. It also urged Iran to release 50 American hostages and hinted at possible UN sanctions. The alliance warned about Soviet activity in Angola and other regions, stressing detente must be worldwide.

Windfall tax deal edged through Senate vote

The Senate ended a three day filibuster to advance a 178 billion oil windfall profits tax bill with a 23 billion minimum tax carve in. The compromise sets a 10 percent minimum on newly discovered oil and 20 percent on heavy or difficult to extract crude. Iowa senators split. White House deem it not acceptable but see it as a step toward passage. Senate leader Byrd predicted possible completion by Saturday if not sooner.

Village man lights up season with 48 displays and 10000 bulbs

Larry Kersten of rural Vinton puts up a year end display on a four acre property three miles northwest of Vinton off the Mount Auburn blacktop.
