Jesse J. Oliphant 90 of 932 Maplewood Drive NE died Wednesday after a long illness in Cedar Rapids where he lived 21 years. Born July 8, 1881 in Center Point he married Iona Fern Taylor January 9, 1952 in Cedar Rapids. He was a cabinet maker and farmer and a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance church. Surviving: wife five sons five daughters sister 30 grandchildren 32 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. Services Friday 10 a.m. at Chapel of Memories and Saturday 1:30 p.m. at Rausch Rockman funeral home Barron Wisconsin. Burial Wayside Cemetery Barron. Friends may call Cedar Memorial funeral home after noon Thursday and at chapel after 9 a.m. Friday. Contributions may go to Christian and Missionary Alliance church fund. Lester Bean 69 lifelong Cedar Rapids resident died Tuesday born July 11 1902 in Cedar Rapids partner in B and F Transfer in freight business member of Eagles and Teamsters. Surviving: daughter and sister two brothers and two grandchildren. Services Friday 1:30 p.m. at Beatty-Beurle chapel with Rev. John E. Wheatley of Christ United Presbyterian church. Burial Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call Beatty-Beurle funeral home after 7 p.m. Wednesday casket will be closed at 12:45 p.m. Friday and not opened after the service.
Vennie Z Warren 79 widow of W L Warren and Cedar Rapids resident for 50 years died after a brief illness. Born March 20 1892 in Waverly Tennessee she was a Bethel AME member and Padmore lodge IBPOEW alum. Survived by Dorothy Robinson Cedar Rapids son Richard A Warren Los Angeles and a great grandchild. Services at Turner Chapel East 1 30 p m Saturday with Rev John S Thomas and the Elks Auxiliary. Burial Oak Hill Turner East until 1 p m Saturday. Casket not opened after service.
Farman John G. is to be buried at Czech National Cemetery after a 10:30 a.m. service at Brush chapel conducted by Rev. John Moore. Dennis Robert McCann of the Church of Christ in Toddville will be laid to rest at Dunkard cemetery after a 3 p.m. service led by Rev. Lee Newin, with Toddville American Legion graveside honors. Dan Hazen Owen of Turner chapel west will have a 1:30 p.m. service by Rev. Ernest W. Larson, burial at Linwood cemetery. William Joseph Wenke will be remembered with 1:30 p.m. services at Beatty Bearle chapel by Rev. Louis McDonough of St. Matthew's Catholic church followed by burial at Linwood cemetery. Friends may register at Turner east until 9 p.m. Wednesday and at the church after 10 a.m. Thursday.
Oren Le Roy Bowen 64 of 2437 Illinois Street SW Cedar Rapids died Tuesday after a brief illness. He worked for Collins Radio Co before retiring in 1969 born November 30 1907 in Delta. He married Bernadine Gibson July 10 1934 in Cedar Rapids. Survived by mother Mattie Bowen three brothers Chalmer Wilmer T and Robert W. Services at Turner Chapel West 3 p.m. Friday with Rev. A T Washington. Friends may call until 2:45 p.m. Friday. Casket will be closed after service.
Agnes L. Newell widow of Dr. George E. Newell and former Greene Hall housemother at Coe College died in Bartlesville Oklahoma on December 1 after a brief illness. Services were held December 3 in Bartlesville and burial followed in Hastings Nebraska. She served at Coe College from 1938 to 1946 and was an honorary member of the national missions board of United Presbyterian Churches. No survivors in the Cedar Rapids area.
Clarence Shomler a former Cedar Rapids resident and Union Pacific retiree died in Huntington Beach California on December 7. He was born December 13 1883 in Shellsburg and is survived by his daughter Mrs George Gunn of Cedar Rapids. Funeral is Monday at 10 30 a m with Rev Ralph B Colton officiating. Burial in Shellsburg cemetery. Friends may call at Turner East after 1 p m Saturday.
Mercy and St Luke's hospitals staged a joint disaster drill at 1 p.m. Wednesday testing a combined plan based on a bogus train bus crash on First Avenue. One hundred fictitious casualties involved. 50 imagined casualties assigned to each hospital under Civil Defense coordination.
