Weekend Traffic Toll Rises to 6
Six people died in weekend traffic accidents in Iowa linked to the state's first major winter storm. In Waukon, Alvina Gramlech, 70, died when a car driven by her grandson Steven Millerman, 21, struck a parked truck on highway 9 within the city limits. Millerman, injured, said glare blinded him. Gramlech funeral services are with Burke funeral home. Survivors include several relatives. In Palo, Clifford C. Mather, 47, died when his car collided with an oncoming vehicle on highway 94 north of Cedar Rapids. occupants Edwin and Mrs. Booth were hospitalized.

Pilot Lands To Aid Motorist Then Crashes
Ankeny AP report says Warren Bensley of Des Moines landed a light plane in a snow field near Ankeny to help a stranded motorist fix a radiator hose. After the repair, the plane crashed on take-off, destroying the craft. no injuries to Bensley or passenger Lawrence Yates. Charles Link of Marshalltown had to call for help again.

Boy 5 Rescued From Washer After being wedged headfirst
Des Moines five year old Johnny Ray Belew became trapped inside his mother’s top loading washer on Sunday. Neighbors, a neighbor, and three policemen failed to free him before Lt Gene Phillips arrived. He cut through the agitator with a hacksaw and removed fragments with pliers to free the boy. The child emerged with only sore ears.

Autos Collide At Ditch Edge Near Burr Oak
Special to The Gazette reports a Sunday night collision along highway 52 just north of Burr Oak injured two youths. Larry Lee Fishbaugher, 17, Harmony Minnesota, was passing a truck in a no passing zone when the crash occurred. Charles John Schutte, 20, rural Ossian, topped a hill as Fishbaugher passed, and both drivers veered toward the ditch to avoid collision. Fishbaugher suffered skull and wrist fractures and lacerations. Schutte had a broken nose, ankle injuries, and lacerations. Both were listed in fair condition.

Trains collide in Hampton block highway traffic
Two North Western freight trains collided head on in Hampton on Sunday. Engines derailed and traffic on several routes including Highway 3 was blocked. Officials blamed a misaligned switch causing the southbound to be routed onto the siding. No injuries were reported though engines were heavily damaged.

Longtime Educator Roger Northrop Dies After Surgery
Roger Northrop 57, longtime East Iowa educator, died after open heart surgery in a Milwaukee hospital. He served as Oelwein junior high math teacher and earlier as junior high and high school principal, led Wapsie Valley Fairbank and Dana districts, then returned to Oelwein last September. Blood donors from Oelwein helped during his operation. Services pending at Hintz Funeral Home. Surviving are his wife Jeane, daughter Nancy, and son Randy.

Tama man charged with drunk driving appears in mayor’s court
District Court bound Tama-Alexander Walker Jr., 22, of Indian settlement, after appearing in Mayor Jim Sorensen’s court. He posted 10 percent of a 500 dollar bond and was released from custody. Walker was arrested November 26 by the highway patrol at the east edge of Tama on Highway 30.
