Iowa Revenue Gap With Tax Cuts Shapes Next Budget

State projections show 2025 general fund revenue at 8.726 billion against an 8.91 billion spending baseline, creating a 184 million shortfall. Lawmakers could trim spending, use a 2+ billion surplus, or tap 3.7 billion in the Taxpayer Relief Fund to cover gaps. Personal income tax is down 665 million, 12 percent, amid multi-bill tax cuts since 2019. The report notes 2025 will see a 3.8 percent flat income tax and a 4.3 percent rise in sales tax revenue, with lawmakers and parties split over the implications for households and programs.

Iowa federal commutations grant up to 35 years pardoned

Commutations in Iowa reduce sentences for inmates convicted from 2004 onward. Recipients include a Cedar Rapids man who hid meth in stuffed animals and a Marion rodeo clown who grew marijuana, among others such as a Cedar Rapids woman with meth and several for crack cocaine or fentanyl distribution. No parole exists in the federal system, but good-behavior credits may shorten time.
